This great heritage bears testimony to the glory of our ancient
Civilization. Our National fortunate in that we are in possession of many
valuabe archaeological remains which reflect our proud history .
There are numerous archaeological and cultural treasures buried
In the soil of our country. Unearthing and exposing them would be most
Inspiring not only to us but also to the whole world. Archaeological
remains are not the exclusive property of any single country. They
belong to the entire human race. It is in recognition of this that
UNESCO is assisting our Cultural Triangle Project.
The untiring efforts of the pioneers in the field of archaeology over
the last hundred years made in possible to unearth stupendous Dagobas
serene Buddha Images and beautiful paintings in Sri Lanka. It is fitting.
therefore that on this important occasion of the centenary of the
Archaeological Department, we should gratefully remember all those
early pioneers, as well as those now laboring devotedly in archaeo-
logical exploration and conservation.
Benefitting from this long and rich experience, the Archaeological
Department and all other related services are now ready to enter the
second century of their march forward. I extend my best wishes to them
for the success of all their endeavours.
