According to tradition the Kings of Lanka had always been “Tri Sinhala Adhisvara”, Lord of the Three Sinhalas. This title originates in the ancient division of the country into three parts - Raja Rata Ruhunu Rata and Malaya Rata.
This account of the last phase in the history of Tri Sinhala begins with the death of King Rajadhi Raja sinha in August 1798. Childless like his predecessors, Rajadhi Raja sinha’s death unleashed a bitter struggle for the succession. The key figure in this contest was the Maha Adigar of chiefMinister, Pilima Talauve; the most powerful man at court, who met British Governor, Frederick North in a secret meeting in June 1800 and called upon the English to invade the kingdom of place him on the throne. This encounter marks the beginning of the end of the Kandyan Kingdom. Here onwards its last years are shrouded in a cloud of insidious plotting and planning, as one by one the Kandyan nobles turned against the King.
This is the background to Sir Paul E. Pieris ‘ Tri Sinhala the last phase. It is a careful, scholarly record of the intrigues and conspiracies which led up to the final betrayal of the king and the Kingdom in 1815. Based almost entirely on original documents, it is really a history of diplomacy and negotiation. In detached, measured tones, very different from the vivid prose style of some of his other works, Sir Paul E.Pieris carefully details the intricate and seemingly endless negotiations between the British and the Kandyan Chiefs. Step by step the threads his way confidently through a tortuous web of intrigue and duplicity. In doing so he unearths a mass of hitherto unpublished sources – official and private cor-respondence, secret letters and despatches report and personal diaries. Culled mostly from the archives of the public Record Office in London, these materials provide an original and authentic account of these crucial transactions.
