This book seeks to bring before the common reader the Buddhist monuments of old Ceylon-a distinctive and valuable portion of the art of the ancient and medieval world. It will not be necessary to indicate that this is no learned treatise for the specialist in archaeology and religion, who will neither need the instruction provided here,, nor seek what he may need at such a source. If this book will have provided the general reader with some intimations of the development of an artistic achievement not as well known as it deserves to be, it will have served its purpose.
I Have throughout these pages which follow acknowledged my indebtedness to the researches of eminent workers in the fields of archaeology and history. I owe, in addition, a special debt to Mr. C. W. Nicholas and Bhikkhu W. Rabula, who, reading through the manuscript, made a number of important suggestions and criticisms. Naturally theirs is not the responsibility for the sins of omission and commission of this study.
