List of Inscriptions on Tombstones and Monuments in Ceylon of historical and local interest, the monumental compilation by John Penry Lewis, first published in 1913, is here being offered to the public after eighty-one years. It constitutes a notable landmark in the decade old Navrang project to reprint scarce of otherwise rare antiquarian literature on Ceylon. The series already consists of at least thirty important and valuable works reproduced in the identical format of the first edition. This significant programme began with the 1681 facsimile edition of A Historical Relation of the Island Ceylon by Robert Knox, and the latest title is a substantial and invaluable addition to the growing list. It is of considerable interest to all students of the colonial period of Sri Lanka history, and a mine of information for all connoisseurs of Dutch and British rule.
The Introduction by Lewis is compulsory reading for the user of this directory, as he lays bare, with a meticulous pen, the scope and content of the documentation he has unearthed so painstakingly. The nature of his approach is disciplined and the quality of the industry on display a lasting tribute to the compiler’s devotion to a challenging enterprise. Carried out purely as a labour of love and in the course of a busy official career, the material garnered so impeccably is astonishingly diverse and informative even in this day and age.
This reprint is a faithful reproduction of the first edition, and is embellished by an Introduction written specially for the purpose by the eminent scholar-librarian and bibliographer, H.A.I. Goonetileke. His contribution greatly enhances the value of this reprint, particularly as it also contains an additional list of errata and addenda compiled by Lewis himself before his death.
