The Southern Provincial Councils Election in 1994 was a landmark in the contemporary political history of Sri Lanka. It laid the foundation for the defeat of the UNP in the major national elections which followed this particular election, and it therefore, accelerated the process of political change in Sri Lanka after a lapse of seventeen years. This new book, which focuses on the electoral process at the provincial level had been prepared on the basis of a survey conducted by the author during the coarse of the election. There are detailed chapters on previous provincial councils system, 1993 provincial council elections, the role of political parties, candidates, the campaign strategies, the conduct of the poll and results. The author, being a trained political scientist, examines the way in which this election restored the dynamism of the Sri Lankan electorate. It is his view that this election, apart from laying the foundation for a major political change, revised the democratic electoral tradition of Sri Lanka.
