“Before it (the Vanni ) acquired this name, it appears to have been known as the Adankappattu” . (page 11)
“from the enquiries made by Mr. Turnour in 1807, it appeared that there had been a great decline in population in the Vanni between 1783 and that year”. (page 41)

“Tanniyuttu being in the centre of a number of populous villages has the largest and busiest market in the Vanni. Every afternoon, for about two hours, a small but brisk trade is carried on by the women of the surrounding villages either by barter or selling according to circumstances.”
