The author lived in Ceylon for about thirteen years and acquired extended acquaintance with its natives. This long association enabled him to gain wide knowledge of the country and of its varied population, and he thought that it would be interesting to put this knowledge together in the form of a book.
The former part of the book contains the state of the country, its products, and capabilities. The middle portion, according to the author, will not be unedifying to those who study buman nature, and who desire to see how far man can advance in moral and religious knowledge without the advantages of a Divine revelation; they will there learn how very defective and low is the standard of morality in a nation whre the worship of the true God is unknown; and they will be doubly thankful for the possession of that matchless volume, which, in the language of a philosopher, a man of learning ans a true Christian " independent of its Divine origin, contains more sublimity, purer morality, more important history, and finer strains of eloquence than can be collected from all other books, in whatever language they may have been written". The latter portion of the work details the operations of the Church Missionary Society with sufficient minuteness to enable the Christian reader to trace from year to year the hand of God in the improvement of the Natives.
