The Rajput states had bravely withstood the repeated attempts of foreign invaders to subjugate them. However, in 1303, Ala-ud-din Khilji succeeded in sacking Mewar and capturing Chittor.
Though traditions ascribes the reconquering of Chittor to Hammir, later historical inscriptions make no reference to this crowning achievement of Hammir?s life. However, an inscription of 1429 at the Ekalingji temple of Chittor does corroborate the traditional account. And Col. Tod, in his ?Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan?, has given a place of pride to Hammir in his account of the history of Mewar.
Hammir?s valor and his role in founding the state of Mewar made his name a household word in Rajasthan. Many romantic tales, the most important of which ?Hammir-Kavya? were woven around his heroic deeds.
