From ancient times, various forms of Nature worship, demonolatry and polytheistic beliefs have existed among the Hindus giving birth to millions of gods and goddesses, some benign and some malevolent. These gods and goddesses have been worshipped, either to seek favours for welfare and prosperity or to seek freedom from pestilence and calamity that the invisible being or forces might wreak upon the people. The sacrificial ritual often formed the most important part of the worship.
Hindu Gods & Goddesses lists hundreds of devis and deotas, and their shrines, that even today receive worship from the devout Hindus and surveys the religlous observances and rituals, some of which from modern Hindu point of view may be downright primitive and worthy of abhorance. The study is confined only to the religious observances of the people of the hill regions bordering Punjab, as it is here that the pracftical religion of the Hindus has remined unaffected by the rationalist and reformist winds that have been blowing in the plains below from time to time during the past many centuries.
This study will interest the inquisitive layman who will find a lot that will add to his knowledge, as well as the researcher who will find in it exvellent raw material on which to base his more serious studies. Written in simple and lucid style, the study is of immense interest and importance not only as a contribution to the history of Hinduism but also as a chapter in the evolution of human thought.
