About the book
According to tradition the Kings of
lanka had always been “Tri Sinhala
adhisvara”, Lord of the Three Sinhalas. This
title originates in the ancient division of the
country into three part-Raja Rata, Ruhunu
rata and Malaya Rata.
This account of the last phase in the
history of Tri Sinhala begins with the death of
king Rajadhi Raja Sinha in August 1798.
childless like his predecessors, Rajadhi Raja
sinha’s death unleashed a bitter struggle for
the succession. The Key figure in this contest
was the Maha Adigar of Chief Minister, Pilima
talauve: the most powerful man at court, who
met British Governor, Frederick North in a
secret meeting in june 1800 and called upon
the English to invade the kingdom and place
him on the throne. This encounter marks the
beginning of the end of the kandyan King-
dom. Here onwards its last years are shrouded
in a cloud of insidious plotting and planning,
as one by one the Kandy an nobles turned against the King.
