Buddhism reached Gandhara about 256 B.C. The Buddhists texts describe Gandhara as the second holy land of Buddhism’. Though the Hellenistic influence on Gandharan Sculpture is conspicuous and the form is strongly Hellenistic yet the matter and motifs are chiefly Indian. And owing to the alien influence a great deal of refinement is noticeable in architectural details and technical subtleties. The fusion of Hellenistic genius and Buddhist piety has greatly contributed to the Indian art. So much so that it became a source of inspiration for artists from the Central Asia and the Far East.
Recovered in excavatory operations and treasured in the Peshawar Museum the Gandharan Sculptures are some rara expositions of this significant school of art. In this book, the author presents remarkable insight into the Gandharan art. Supplemented with plates and supported by exploratory and explanatory notes, it is a neatly executed work which the readers will find illuminating. The competent and meticulous explanation of the exhibits has greatly alleviated the value of this work. Those interested in the subject will find it a peerless work.
